The growing global population of companion animals, coupled with increasing scrutiny of the environmental impact of food production, has intensified interest in alternative protein sources for pet nutrition. Jednak już w momencie jego ogłoszenia było jasne, że potrzebny będzie drugi etap, szerszy, wykraczający poza zdrowie i obejmujący przemysłową biotechnologię oraz bioprodukcję.
